GPT is a real estate investment trust. The group has been publicly listed on the Australian stock exchange since 1971. As part of its aspiration to be an overall positive contributor to Australia’s communities, people and the environment, the company has achieved carbon neutral certification for its business operations at its Sydney head office, Victorian state office, the management offices at each building managed by GPT and at its serviced workplace offering Space&Co.

“Measure your impact, get your policies right and drive toward them progressively.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2011.

Why are you carbon neutral?

GPT has an overall aspiration to be a positive contributor to our communities, people and the environment.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

GPT’s Climate Change and Energy Policy sets a target of zero emissions. To meet this target, we needed to explore the boundaries, measurement techniques and communication methods that would support the achievement of this important goal.

What offset projects do you support?

In 2018 we supported wind power projects in India.

How can the community support you?

Buy Green Power, request carbon neutral space in leasing requests.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Emissions have been avoided by moving to paperless offices which has seen the introduction of electronic filing systems that have reduced paper use. GPT has also facilitated better office to office communications reducing the need for travel and installed energy efficient lighting to ensure lights are only on when required. We have increased our use of renewable energy on GPT properties and introduced innovative waste programs that are focused on closing the materials loop, avoiding landfill and recycling materials. By working with our energy supply chain we procure Green Power and then offset the remainder of emissions.

What has been the impact of your action?

This is comprehensively reported on our website.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Measure your impact, get your policies right and drive toward them progressively.
