Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since August 2019.

Why are you carbon neutral?

As a One Planet Company and a founding signatory of the World Green Building Council's Net Zero Carbon Commitment, we set ourselves clear goals to reduce our environmental impact and our carbon footprint. Our Sustainability Roadmap One Planet, One Chance sets objectives, KPIs and actions set out against environmental and social impacts which are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this, Cundall is targeting zero carbon for their global business by 2020, with the Australian offices using Climate Active certification to achieve this for our part of the business.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Obtaining Climate Active certification is a major step towards achieving our goals, by providing a transparent and robust third-party audited process to quantify, then reduce, our carbon footprint in Australia.

Many of our clients are embarking on the Carbon Neutral journey for their businesses and projects.

What offset projects do you support?

Cundall has purchased and retired Climate Active eligible offsets from the 5000MW Ghani Solar Renewable Power Project by Greenko Group in Andhra Pradesh State of India.

Why did you choose this project?

We chose this project because it closely relates to what we are doing on a daily basis. Renewable energy is an important topic in the building industry reducing carbon footprints, but also lowering operational costs for owners and tenants.

How can the community support you?

As an engineering company in the building industry, our commitment to a low-carbon future cannot stop at our organisational operations. This is why our roadmap is set up over four cornerstones, which includes our projects as a major focus.

All our designers develop and encourage solutions to improve the environmental and social performance of every project we work on, with a particular focus on greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we already work on some of the most ambitious projects, we believe that we can do more for a more sustainable construction industry. With the ongoing support of our clients, we seek the best outcomes for low carbon emissions but also add value to new and existing assets.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

We are working on reducing our emissions to a minimum. Some of our key actions to reach this target include:

  • Establishment of Green Teams in every office and a global Sustainability Committee to develop strategies for emission reductions
  • Education and training for all staff through meetings, presentations and the Cundall Diploma
  • A focus on energy consumption, namely energy reduction measures and a shift to off-site renewables
  • Regular updates to our procurement policy to purchase more plant-based foods but also low energy equipment and non-toxic cleaning materials
  • We continuously seek to improve our data quality and report openly and transparently to our staff and the public

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

A robust data collection and data management strategy is key for a successful certification. Many companies already have an existing NABERS rating which can help to collect relevant data more quickly and efficiently and makes the process of becoming Climate Active certified easier.
