How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2017.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Our team at dsquared Consulting believes the road to sustainability is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. dsquared is a specialist consultancy for integrating sustainability into the design and operation of built environments, and as an organisation we have been constantly refining how we embed sustainable practices in our business. Giving back as much as you take is part of being a good steward of the land. Therefore, we felt the need to account for more than just energy use in our business and evaluate our environmental footprint holistically by accounting for the greenhouse gas emissions from staff commuting, business travel, stationary procurement, and more. We decided to target Climate Active certification as an accredited pathway to measure and take action for a business’s environmental footprint.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Through the process of becoming certified Climate Active we can proudly say that our organisation has responsibly accounted for our environmental footprint and can showcase environmental leadership as a business following an accredited pathway. This is important to us from a marketing perspective as well as establishing trust with our clients. Going through the carbon neutral certification also has helped us set benchmarks for our organisation to hold ourselves accountable and help monitor our performance across business activities.

What offset projects do you support?

Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in Western Australia and the China Flue Gas Waste Heat To Energy plant.

Why did you choose these projects?

Our main objective in the search for carbon offsets was to support Australian biodiversity/ecological restoration projects hence our investment for the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor project in WA. This reforestation project more than removes carbon from the atmosphere. It has positive social, environmental and economic benefits and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The project removes 1.257 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere in an area where over 90 per cent of the bushland has been cleared. Our offset provider, Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd, attached credits from the China Flue Gas Waste Heat to Energy plant as an interim project to support until Yarra Yarra biodiversity corridor credits were validated. The Chinese project has four glass production lines and has a total daily melting capacity of 2000 tonnes. Its purpose is to utilize waste heat from exhaust gas of these glass production lines for power generation.

How can the community support you?

Recommend or utilise us for development projects of any scale. We work on projects all across Australia and can provide services from the earliest stages of project master planning, through building design, construction and operation. Our passion, expertise and experience add real value to projects of all sizes, from precinct infrastructure planning right down to the selection of office furniture.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

An office fit out in 2014 included switching to more energy efficient T5 lighting with daylight and motion sensors. In 2016 a 2kW solar array was added to the roof to improve energy savings and reduce operational costs. In 2017 we installed additional sub-metering to better understand where our biggest energy consumption was to help identify opportunities to further reduce energy consumption. We are actively encouraging staff to utilise low carbon transport options such as public transport, cycling and car sharing to work.

What has been the impact of your action?

Since 2015 we have achieved a cumulative saving of nearly 2,600kWh of electricity, reduced carbon emissions by 1.6 tonnes, and saved $1,300 in electricity costs.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Much like any journey, having the right companions makes the experience smoother and more enjoyable. There are various aspects within the certification process that require specialist services, like aligning calculations with accepted measurement factors, auditing methodologies and accepted carbon offset standards. Selecting the right personnel to work with early is necessary for a successful outcome. We would also strongly encourage the development of internal data collection and accounting format relating to carbon emissions so there is already a mechanism established for reporting periods.
