FTA Coffee

FTA Coffee is part of the HSK Ward Group – a sixth-generation family-owned company that has been operating in Melbourne since 1852.

As green coffee importers, FTA Coffee is focused on developing sustainable supply chains; providing quality green coffee that is both environmentally and ethically sound.

We believe we are in a unique position as the link between consumers and producers to mitigate the negative impacts of the coffee value-chain and make a positive and impactful contribution on behalf of all its members.

“Pursuing carbon-neutrality through Climate Active was an obvious choice for the company to formalise and make-public our desire to contribute to the global journey to a net-zero future.”

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since January 2022.

Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?

Both as individuals and as a company, we believe in acting with respect and integrity and doing the right thing. This includes not only how we approach our day-to-day business transactions but also in how we take responsibility for the negative impacts of our actions.

Caring for the planet by taking responsibility for the environmental impacts of our supply-chain is a key tenet of this ethos.

Pursuing carbon-neutrality through Climate Active was an obvious choice for the company to formalise and make-public our desire to contribute to the global journey to a net-zero future.

What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

This is the first milestone for us in establishing a formal sustainability platform for the business.

All members of the business feel a sense of pride at this achievement, and we hope that our customers will feel the same knowing that they are having certified carbon-neutral green coffee delivered to their door.

Hopefully we will inspire our customers to join us on our carbon-neutral journey and partake in our café-gate carbon-neutrality certification which we will offer alongside our roaster-gate certification.

What offset projects do you support?

A fire abatement project in Northern Territory, Australia, a forestry project in New South Wales, Australia, a renewable electricity project in Indonesia, a cookstove projects in Africa and Central America, a forestry project in Peru, and a wind farm project in India.

Why did you choose these projects?

It was important to us that the programs we selected for our offset-purchases matched our supply-chain and benefitted the people and areas that we sourced coffee from.

As the carbon-neutral program becomes more embedded into our business, we hope to make this more targeted and eventually offer customers choice around what programs their purchases contribute to.

How can customers support you?

We’d love to see both our customers and end-consumers becoming even more aware of the positive impacts they can make by deliberately choosing to purchase coffee that is environmentally and ethically sourced; thereby making a positive contribution to the planet and to the people producing it.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

We’re currently working hard to reduce our organisational emissions – sourcing green energy, increasing our use of recyclable and reusable materials, and researching end-of-life solutions for things like GrainPro bags and coffee sacks.

At origin, we’re constantly seeking out new partners and programs that work to improve environmental and social outcomes for the regions and producers we source green coffee from.

What has been the impact of your action?

We have inspired the wider HSK Ward group to pursue Climate Active certification for the entire organisation and to investigate the installation of solar panels for the Altona warehousing and manufacturing site.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

To just do it. Yes, you need to dedicate the resources and time required, but the process is worthwhile and inspiring, and you will find it extremely rewarding in the end.

Also, if you need help or don’t know where to start – there are numerous advisers and consultants who can guide you through the process. Beginning the process is the most important step.
