We are building the infrastructure platform for the digital economy, providing the crucial power, security and connectivity to the world’s leading cloud platforms, national carrier networks and critical ICT solutions that enable organisations to thrive in today’s digital age.

We design, build and operate a national network of nine enterprise-grade data centres that are certified to the highest possible global standards and that uncompromisingly demonstrate best-in-class standards of energy efficiency, security and connectivity in the industry all of which enable NEXTDC to deliver on our brand promise of 100 per cent uptime.

“NEXTDC supports the science of climate change and we’re not afraid of using that conviction to show others how our business interests can help create a better future for all.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since November 2018.

Why are you carbon neutral?

NEXTDC supports the science of climate change and we’re not afraid of using that conviction to show others how our business interests can help create a better future for all. We build and operate a national footprint of Australia’s most energy efficient data centres which serves as a reminder that organisations can be engineered to both support the environment and improve business efficiencies. The carbon footprint of our corporate operations that we cannot avoid, we offset to be carbon neutral. Being Climate Active carbon neutral allows us to spread the message with integrity that we all need to make continual improvements to the way we use the planet’s finite resources.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Our focus on carbon neutrality has clear benefits in both operational cost efficiencies and for our marketing strategy as Australia’s most energy efficient data centre company. Our customers include most of the world’s leading digital companies. As their power usage surges under demand for core computer processing, they are increasingly aware of responsibilities to reduce their carbon footprint and increase transparency around environmental sustainability across all operations, supply chains and partner networks. Being a pioneer in our industry in achieving certification for carbon neutral operations gives us market differentiation.

How can the community support you?

Consumers and corporate customers can support our efforts by telling people that NEXTDC takes its carbon footprint reduction very seriously and also by holding our competitors to account for their lack of action in putting environmental sustainability at the centre of their data centre operations.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

NEXTDC is the only data centre company operating in Australia to have achieved NABERS 5-star accreditation for energy efficient buildings. The only higher priority than environmental sustainability for our award-winning design and operations teams is safety. We incorporate all past learnings and continually innovate to improve our energy efficiency on the drawing board of new data centres and in the day-to-day operations of existing facilities. We have been involved from the outset with the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project which funded the 80KW Crowlands Windfarm in Ararat, Victoria. Our M1 data centre in Melbourne has a $1.2 million 401kW solar array covering the entire roof.

What has been the impact of your action?

This has not been estimated. Our carbon footprint was baselined only after emissions reduction initiatives were already in place.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Individual consumers and corporate customers alike are increasingly demanding transparency on carbon emissions and direct action to reduce the impact industry has on the environment. Climate Active certification for carbon neutrality is a clear signal that you take seriously your responsibilities to do everything you can for the future of the planet and its diverse communities. It allows you to take a stance as an environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility leader.
