Powershop

Powershop Australia was launched in 2014 and is backed by our parent company Meridian Energy, Australasia’s largest 100 per cent renewable generator with wind farms and hydro power stations in three Australian states. Powershop was launched to turn the Australian energy industry on its head - putting customers and the environment first. We currently have more than 130,000 customers across Victoria, NSW, South Australia and South East Queensland with our sights set on a brighter and greener energy future for all.

“Our customers understand that we’re committed to a better energy future that Australians (and the planet) need and deserve.”

Type of certification

Organisation and product certification. Meridian Energy Australia and Powershop are certified carbon neutral against the requirements of Climate Active. Beyond operational offsets, the Climate Active certification also applies to all of the electricity and gas used in our customers’ homes. The impact of our certification will grow as our customer base grows.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Powershop has been certified since September 2014. Meridian Energy Australia has been certified carbon neutral since 2007.

Why are you carbon neutral?

No matter which energy retailer you buy your electricity from, it all comes from the same central pool called the National Electricity Market (NEM) and also known as the energy grid. The energy grid is made up of energy from a variety of sources, including renewable generation (solar, wind and hydro) and coal-fired power. Although Meridian Energy only supplies energy generated from renewable sources to the NEM, we can’t control which energy is delivered to our customers’ home or business. Consequently, we made the decision to carbon offset all of our customer’s energy usage so that we can help reduce our customers’ carbon footprint. Our customers understand that we’re committed to a better energy future that Australians (and the planet) need and deserve.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Our carbon neutral certification makes up part of our identity as an organisation that’s committed to being a better power company. Big changes start with a commitment for a better future and, for us, Climate Active certification is a necessary step to meaningful change. We are committed to sharing this positive impact with every customer at no extra cost to them. Also, our carbon neutral certification has a great impact on our team’s culture. Our stance on environmental impact is embraced by our staff and this has led to a systemic shift in attitude. It’s a great environment to work in.

What offset projects do you support?

We carefully select a mixture of local, national and international projects including Forests Alive’s Verified Emission Reduction Credits (an Australian based forestry project).

Why did you choose these projects?

We employ a rigorous selection process when it comes to purchasing our certificates from sustainability projects to ensure that they are accredited under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Clean Development Mechanism project, verified under the Kyoto Protocol. Basically, it means that we care about what projects we buy certificates from. We ensure that they are verified programs that contribute to lowering carbon emissions around the world. We’re not just buying any certificate – it has to meet accredited guidelines and it has to be programs we are comfortable supporting. We do not purchase any certificates from projects that support the harvesting of palm oil and we incorporate other parameters around environmental protection which guide the certificates we purchase.

How can the community support you?

Make the switch to us and we can do the rest! Our customers are a conscientious bunch. Many have joined us because they agree with what we stand for, and we love that. Simply by joining Powershop, all our customers are supporting a company committed to carbon offsetting at no extra cost to them. The more customers that join us, the more carbon we can offset. And that’s exciting. Also, Meridian Energy Australia aims to put more renewable energy into the grid than what our customer base would actually be using, so as our customer base grows so does our renewable energy contribution.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

In the Powershop office, not only have we started separating our food waste and soft plastics to prevent them from entering landfill, we have also created bins for coffee grounds, batteries and e-waste. Our food waste and coffee grounds are collected by the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and, as a result, we are diverting around 5-6kg of food waste from landfill every day! That doesn’t sound like a lot, but the greenhouse gas that would be created from this would be roughly 1.3 tonnes each year. Batteries and e-waste are taken to a Sustainability Victoria e-waste facility, ensuring that potentially hazardous and precious materials are reused or disposed of safely. Long term we are swapping the batteries used for small electronics to rechargeable batteries to reduce our e-waste. We also assess our staff’s broader impact on the environment and offer support though the PTV Commuter Club and the Bicycle Network to encourage the use of public transport and cycling to commute to and from work rather than using cars.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Make sure to collect data in advance or as you go as this will save it from becoming a big, daunting task at audit time! Speak to any suppliers to see if they’re carbon offsetting and if not, proactively ask them to keep records of fuel use or supplies to assist in your tracking. You can also introduce initiatives that you know will favourably affect emissions, e.g. switching to GreenPower electricity early on or switch to an electric vehicle.
