Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

2019 is our third year of carbon neutral certification.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Protect’s vision is to be “the best work entitlement fund in Australia” through different strategies, including being “socially responsible, community minded, industry supportive and a great place to work”. Becoming a Carbon Neutral Organisation has assisted Protect to efficiently improve its operations adopting sustainable solutions and consciously demonstrating our social and environmental commitments with the community.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Protect is the first industry severance scheme to become a Climate Active Carbon Neutral organisation. Being the first in the industry, the certification allows us to communicate and be inspired by larger companies that have been doing this for longer than us.

We want our employees and clients to be proud of being associated with a company that is thinking about the future of our environment.

What offset projects do you support?

Protect supports a Community Forestry Program with WithOneSeed in East Timor.

Why did you choose these projects?

WithOneSeed drives a community forestry program that focus on delivering social and economical participation for some of the poorest people in the Asia Pacific region. The program has four commitments: reforestation, economic participation, university education and regional partnerships. By supporting WithOneSeed, Protect not only offset emissions that cannot be reduced or eliminated, we also support the development of subsistence communities through sustainable solutions.

How can the community support you?

Protect has heavily invested in the development of electronic communication channels, such as online portals and mobile applications, to enhance the online interaction with its members.

By enhancing our electronic channels of communication, and encouraging our members to utilise these channels, our customers are also contributing and supporting our carbon neutral initiative.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Our emissions reduction activities include:

  • 100% GreenPower from December 2017;
  • replacement of lighting system; including timers and/or sensors on light switches;
  • mobile application to communicate and transact with customers;
  • purchase of certified carbon neutral products such as electricity and paper.
  • ceasing the postage of monthly paper contributions to employers.

What has been the impact of your action?

Protect has achieved a reduction in excess of 30% of its emissions through a combination of projects, over 3 consecutive financial years. As a result of this initiative, all staff have gained a better understanding of how they can assist in reducing our footprint as a company as well as individuals. The Protect carbon neutral team is committed to further reducing our emissions through various approaches in the years to come.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Understanding the impact and benefits for the environment and community of becoming a carbon neutral organisation, can be a determining and motivating factor to embarking on the journey to achieve the Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification.

The Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard provides clear directions to successfully achieve the certification. It is important to keep referring to these guidelines at times when you encounter uncertainty or where doubts arise.

The project will require the development of an emissions reduction strategy, which we considered one of the fundamental parts of this project as it will assist in the reduction of your carbon footprint and help to align your plans and expectations with stakeholders. Without the strategy, the project can become less attractive and not transparent to all stakeholders.

Last but not least, wisely choose to offset emissions that cannot be reduced or eliminated, with meaningful projects helping the environment and community.
