Type of certification

Product certification – an opt-in carbon neutral program for Siniat plasterboard and metal products manufactured in our Sydney (Matraville), Melbourne (Altona), Bundaberg and Brisbane (Beenleigh) facilities.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since December 2015.

Why are you carbon neutral?

We were originally approached by a key customer (Lendlease) to explore ways that we could work together to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the supply and installation of plasterboard for the Barangaroo project in Sydney.

Given our existing commitment to reduce our environmental impact on our operations, creating a carbon neutral option for customers resonated with our value of “everything we do, we have the environment and society in mind”.

Since the original certification, we have added our light-weight metal framing systems to our opt-in carbon neutral offer. This means customers can now choose to have a carbon neutral wall for their projects.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Our opt-in carbon neutral program is a first in our industry and a unique offer for our customers. Etex Australia is the only plasterboard manufacturer to successfully have met the standards of the Climate Active to provide carbon neutral boards to the construction industry.

What offset projects do you support?

A safe water life straw program in Kenya.

Why did you choose this project?

The program delivers health, social and carbon reduction benefits in the form of safe drinking water in the home, local employment, improving health, and removing the need to burn timber, avoiding both carbon emissions and deforestation.

In particular, the project was chosen for its strong social responsibility aspect, including improvements for communities and individuals. In this case for women and children, who do not have to spend as much time on gathering and carrying firewood to make their drinking water safe. The project has enabled many young girls who were previously tasked with these chores to attend school.

How can the community support you?

Consumers can support us by requesting Etex Australia carbon neutral products for their homes and workplaces, and opting into Etex’s carbon offset program.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

In our manufacturing facilities, all of our operational programs are designed to reduce emissions – such as generating less waste, increasing energy efficiency, and reducing water consumption.

We recently opened a new plant in Queensland which significantly reduces the emissions related to freight of our products to customers.

Other actions we are taking across our sites are to reduce our business travel by use of videoconference and to replace old lighting with energy efficient LED.
