ActewAGL Retail (ActewAGL) is the capital region’s local electricity and gas retailer, providing energy to homes and business in the Canberra region and nearby centres in the south-east NSW region, including Queanbeyan, Goulburn, the Snowys, Nowra and the South Coast.
ActewAGL was set up in October 2000 when the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL) and Icon Water Limited (formerly ACTEW Corporation), an ACT Government owned corporation, entered into Australia's first multi-utility, public-private partnership.
“We pride ourselves on listening to our community, who now expect ActewAGL to offer sustainable products that limit the environmental impacts of their gas consumption. Providing carbon neutral gas is a way of meeting the expectations of our capital region community.”
Type of certification
Organisation and Product.
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since September 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
ActewAGL is committed to acting as a leader in energy innovation and minimising our impact on the environment. As a local retailer, we recognise that many of our customers rely on gas for heating in the winter months and prefer cooking with gas all year round. We pride ourselves on listening to our community, who now expect ActewAGL to offer sustainable products that limit the environmental impacts of their gas consumption. Providing carbon neutral gas is a way of meeting the expectations of our capital region community.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Through our organisational certification, we believe that our people, shareholders and project partners will be inspired to be part of an organisation that takes climate change and reducing its emissions seriously.
Along with our predecessors, ActewAGL have been committed to the capital region for more than 100 years. We have a responsibility to our local community, and by offering a carbon neutral gas product, we expect that our customers will feel more positively about their carbon footprint.
What offset projects do you support?
A production and dissemination of ceramic water purifiers project in Cambodia and a landfill gas-to-energy project in Canberra, Australia.
Why did you choose these projects?
ActewAGL has purchased a mix of carbon offset certificates including Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and Gold Standard Verified Emission (GS VER) Units supporting both local and international projects. In choosing the projects, we have considered our role in supporting both local and global communities and the associated co-benefits of the individual projects. We have selected projects for their environmental, social and economic benefits to the community, and their alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
How can customers support you?
Energy consumers across the ACT and NSW community can support our climate change commitment by choosing our carbon neutral gas product.
Our customers can have peace of mind knowing that ActewAGL will offset the carbon emissions from their gas usage.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
ActewAGL is actively working with the region to foster energy innovation, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and build a more sustainable future.
Our commitment to reducing our emissions and providing responsible energy solutions is demonstrated through existing actions that underpin the direction of our emission reduction strategy.
ActewAGL own a public EV charging network in the ACT, and have formed a strategic partnership with national EV charging network provider, Evie Networks, to further the expansion and enhancement of EV charging infrastructure across the region.
ActewAGL is also involved in a world-first consortium testing the potential of vehicle-to-grid technology, the construction of Australia’s first public Hydrogen re-fuelling station and the delivery of the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme, which supports customers to waste less and save more on their energy use. These initiatives are in addition to providing all of our customers with the opportunity to purchase electricity from government-accredited renewable sources, including wind power, biomass, hydro and solar, through our customer Greenchoice Program.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
ActewAGL recommend engaging an experienced consultant who is registered under the Climate Active program, as engaging someone with specific expertise in this area has been invaluable.
