AGL is a leading integrated energy business that has been operating for more than 180 years and has a proud heritage of innovation.
We believe in sustainable, secure and affordable energy. We are Australia’s largest ASX-listed investor in renewable energy. We’re investing in new ideas, partnerships and infrastructure – renewing and expanding our portfolio of products to make them more sustainable, reliable, affordable and useful.
At AGL we have a passionate belief in progress – human and technological – and a relentless determination to make things better for our customers, communities, the Australian economy, and our planet.
“AGL believes in order to make real progress towards a cleaner and sustainable future, we need to invest in offset projects that not only positively impact climate change, but also have co-benefits such as economic, environmental or social benefits.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
AGL achieved Climate Active certification in 2020.
Why are you carbon neutral?
From lighting Australia’s first gas lamp in 1841 to developing, building and running some of Australia’s largest solar and wind farms, we have always been evolving and trying to better Australia for our customers and the broader community.
We recognise that our customers care about shaping a more sustainable future. That’s why we’re giving all our customers the choice to opt-in to carbon neutral electricity certified by Climate Active on all AGL electricity plans from 1 July 2020.
Offering all AGL customers a choice is part of AGL’s updated Climate Statement, which confirms AGL’s target of net zero emissions by 2050. It also recognises three major forces drive Australia’s energy transition: customer demand, how communities act, and how technology evolves.
By the end of FY21 a carbon neutral option will be available on all AGL plans - be they electricity, gas or telecommunications – giving all of our customers a choice for the cleaner and more sustainable options many are seeking when it comes to their essential services. A carbon neutral option will also be available via AGL’s subsidiaries; Powerdirect and Perth Energy customers can opt-in to carbon neutral electricity from 30 September 2020.
So, while Carbon Neutral might be our next step towards a sustainable future - it’s not the first. And it certainly won’t be the last.
What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
When our customers opt-in to Carbon Neutral, it allows them to reduce their carbon footprint. They are also making a difference by supporting offset projects both locally and globally.
What offset projects do you support?
We employ a rigorous selection process when it comes to the eligible carbon offsets we purchase.
AGL believes in order to make real progress towards a cleaner and sustainable future, we need to invest in offset projects that not only positively impact climate change, but also have co-benefits such as economic, environmental or social benefits.
We have purchased eligible carbon offset units from accredited projects, including Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and Gold Standard Verified Emissions Reductions (GSVERs) as part of our initial pre-purchase obligations.
We’ve invested in a native forest regeneration project in Australia, and a burn stoves project in Kenya.
Why did you choose these projects?
We chose the Westmere Native Forest Regeneration project because we wanted to support a project located in New South Wales; one of our larger customer base markets. We also recognise that many of our customers were affected by the bushfires over the summer of 2019/2020 and believe that we can all make a difference by supporting a local project.
We chose the Burns Stove project in Kenya because we believe in supporting projects that provide additional benefits to communities and to help preserve the world around us for future generations. The Burn Stoves project has the Sustainable Development Goals associated with it, developed by the United Nations (UN) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. We believe our customers want to help make a difference on climate change and a sustainable future for communities locally, but also globally.
How can the community/customers support you?
By opting into Carbon Neutral when they sign up their electricity to AGL, or if you’re an existing customer, adding Carbon Neutral to your electricity plan.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
As Australia’s largest and oldest integrated electricity generator and retailer, we play a vital role in Australia’s energy market and the wider transition.
AGL’s Climate Statement is the next step in our decarbonisation journey, and commits AGL to action in five areas to further evolve our energy transition plans:
- Offer customers the option of carbon neutral prices across all our products.
- Support the evolution of Australia’s voluntary carbon markets.
- Continue investing in new sources of electricity supply.
- Responsibly transition our energy portfolio.
- Be transparent.
We are already on the path to achieving our target of net zero emissions by 2050, and our five commitments will ensure we responsively and responsibly harness the power of our customers, community and technology to get there.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Take the time to understand your customers and make sure you develop a product that meets their needs.
