Type of certification

Air BP in Australia is certified as carbon neutral for its own-operated refuelling services in Australia.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2016.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Air BP’s decision to certify their refuelling services carbon neutral is to demonstrate a genuine commitment to responding to climate change.

Air BP manages carbon reduction projects to reduce emissions in the operations as well as purchase carbon credits to neutralise emissions.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Buying Air BP Climate Active certified into-plane fuelling services is one of the most affordable and simple ways for our customers to minimise their contributions to climate change.

What offset projects do you support?

Each year Air BP quantifies its carbon emissions for its into plane operations. A carbon reduction plan is in place to reduce operations emissions. Carbon credits are purchased to neutralise Air BP emissions from its into-plane services business

Globally, BP has invested in a deforestation reduction project located in Zambia in Africa.

This project aims to avoid emissions from land-use change through long-term conservation of the Rufunsa Conservancy and  includes:

  • the protection of ecosystem services, such as watershed management, to ensure year-round flows into nearby rivers.
  • developing alternative and/or more sustainable livelihood opportunities that support the overall project goal of reducing deforestation.

Creating employment opportunities for stakeholders living in the project zone. Supporting community enterprise development to alleviate poverty in the project zone, providing access to markets, and providing support towards critical social services such as education and health.

Why did you choose these projects?

BP has a team based in Sunbury UK called Target Neutral. This teams works with BP businesses and customers to offset emissions. Carbon offset projects are selected by Target Neutral based on their stringent criteria.

How can the community support you?

Businesses can support us through the purchase of Air BP fuel at Air BP operated locations.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Air BP is always looking at new technology in our operations to optimise efficiency and produce less carbon emissions. Examples include start/stop technology and variable speed drive in pumping systems at Air BP operated sites.

What has been the impact of your action?

Since receiving carbon neutral certification Air BP has been focused on reducing emissions from airport refueling operations throughout Australia and has offset remaining emissions each year. The goal is to achieve a reduction in emissions each year and thus to reduce the need to purchase offsets.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

A strong operational commitment is required with established procedures and understanding of the investment required. The communications and marketing piece also needs to work closely with operations hand in hand in order to maximise the benefit of certification.
