With_Architecture Studio

With_Architecture Studio is a design-led practice committed to delivering distinctive and functional spaces that yield engaging experiences and create lasting value for client and community. We take pride in responsible design that shows leadership and helps to create places that inspire and enable people. Our best work is achieved through collaborative teamwork. Established in Perth in 1985, we have more than 30 years of commissions, extensively published and awarded, that span the disciplines of architecture, urban design, master planning, interior architecture and public art. With_Architecture Studio is Australia’s first certified carbon neutral architecture practice. We also achieved the nation’s first green star rated multi-residential design awarded by GBCA.

“Achieving carbon neutral certification allows us to lead by example.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

The practice began to monitor its resource consumption in 2014, and tracking improvements, and achieved certification in April 2017.

Why are you carbon neutral?

As part of the building sector that contributes more than 23 per cent to Australia’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, With_Architecture Studio is operating in an industry that can make a real difference to the future development of our society. As an architecture studio we are dedicated to be a progressive driver for sustainable development for our clients and partners and the users of our buildings. Increasing awareness and focus of the environmental footprint of our own organisation was a natural progression. Achieving carbon neutral certification allows us to lead by example.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

There are numerous benefits to being certified carbon neutral. The process is a positive one. Studio members have generally been very engaged and achievement of certification was a bonding experience. We have also significantly reduced costs for the studio’s overheads. With the environment being a considerable focus in the public’s consciousness, having the credentials to back up our studio ethos assures clients and staff that we are actively engaged in making a difference. This resonates positively with both.

What offset projects do you support?

The Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in Western Australia.

Why did you choose these projects?

Our staff members were invited to vote for their preferred offset project and overwhelming chose the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor project due to it being a local initiative supporting Australian biodiversity (as well as reforestation). We also appreciated the added benefit of local and Indigenous employment generated by the project.

How can the community support you?

Clients can become more vocal in demanding service providers that demonstrate commitment to sustainability initiatives within their organisation and are responsible for their own carbon footprint.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Staff are asked to be paperless where possible. The studio provided iPads to encourage reduced printing, using digital mark‐up programs and accessing drawings and other documents digitally. A3 and A4 paper printed on one side is collected and reused in a dedicated copier for printing on the second side. Following a re-brand, old stationery was turned into bespoke notebooks for when paper is unavoidable. Power saving measures include installation of timers for printers, sensors for WC lighting, rechargeable batteries and LED lighting.

What has been the impact of your action?

Electricity is With_Architecture Studio’s largest contributor to gross GHG emissions. Since becoming carbon neutral we have decreased these emissions by 16 per cent in a ‘like for like’ comparison.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Certification is a process that will take years to establish, understand and capitalise on. It should align with your business vision. Conducting an audit of your organisation’s carbon footprint is the first step, and a very illuminating one. The journey to then tackle the most notable contributors is a rewarding and engaging ‘project’ for the entire team.
