Austral Fisheries

Austral Fisheries is one of Australia’s largest integrated commercial fishing companies with interests in both deep sea fishing and at sea prawning. We are proud to be recognised for our responsible fishing practices and continuous efforts in maintaining our environmentally friendly and sustainable methods. We are independently certified as sustainable and well managed by the Marine Stewardship Council in all four of the Australian Commonwealth fisheries we operate and the company and our wild caught products are Climate Active carbon neutral certified.

“Done correctly, being carbon neutral can be a profit centre, not a cost centre.”

Type of certification

Organisation and Product.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2016.

Why are you carbon neutral?

We wanted to continue to strive for environmental excellence in what we do. Our fisheries have been independently certified as sustainable and well managed by the Marine Stewardship Council and we wanted to take responsibility for our other impacts on the environment. Becoming carbon neutral was the logical next step for us.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Staff engagement and community support have been the major intangible benefits of becoming carbon neutral. Financially we have benefited from a clearer focus on making our fishing fleet more fuel efficient. This is a slow process with these being long term assets that rely on burning diesel fuel to operate. However, a major refit project in 2018 on our largest fishing vessel saw a 38 per cent reduction in fuel use in its first year. Given that around 80 per cent of our emissions are from diesel use, it shows the significance of the project and is a major achievement that has environmental and financial benefits.

What offset projects do you support?

To date we have supported the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor Project in Western Australia.

Why did you choose this project?

We wanted to support a local reforestation project. We felt an obligation to ‘clean up after ourselves’ and support a project that sequestered carbon – taking out the emissions caused by our operations. The co-benefits of regenerating with native biodiverse species that bring back native flora and fauna to the region was also important to us and the local and indigenous employment the project brings to the region.

How can the community support you?

By choosing to purchase the only seafood in the world that that has the backing of both the Marine Stewardship Council and is certified carbon neutral. Our Glacier 51 Toothfish and Skull Island Tiger Prawns are available in restaurants locally and internationally, and our Banana Prawns can be purchased at Coles Supermarkets.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

See our Public Disclosure Statement below for a full summary of our emissions reductions activity.

What has been the impact of your action?

Given our operations vary from year to year depending on fish catchability, environmental conditions, and so on, it is hard to aim for a consistent reduction in emissions year on year. Moving forward we will continue to invest in projects that see our fleet become more fuel efficient which has already reduced fuel usage by 38 per cent. This equates to a reduction of 3126t CO2-e and we expect to see similar savings from this vessel every year compared to before the refit was undertaken.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Take the time to really understand where your impacts are coming from and how to capitalise on your story telling about being carbon neutral. Done correctly, being carbon neutral can be a profit centre, not a cost centre.
