Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since October 2020.

Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?

We are proud to be the first fire services organisation in Australia to achieve carbon neutral certification. We have made a commitment to our staff, clients and partners to better understand our environmental impact and actively make changes to the way we conduct business across Australia.

Our longevity in the fire industry is attributable to our desire and willingness to explore new technologies and to challenge traditional ways of doing business. We have identified carbon neutral as a key driver of innovation, creativity and diversity in our sector.

We want to lead our industry in new ways of developing and delivering business that fosters and encourages greater environmental and sustainable practices.

What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

We have seen great satisfaction amongst our staff and clients that we are taking action on climate change and we will actively encourage the organisations we work with to reduce their carbon footprint.

Our productivity and efficiency of travel has drastically improved as we look for ways to reduce our carbon emissions associated with travel.

What offset projects do you support?

A savanna burning project in Australia and a wind power project in China.

Why did you choose these projects?

The savanna burning project aligns with our values to embrace technology and innovative work solutions. Choosing the Aboriginal Carbon Fund reinforces our commitment to help Indigenous communities in rural areas and support local employment opportunities.

The international credits from the wind power project are stapled with an Australian vegetation offset project from Bendigo, Victoria. We have selected Orana Park, to reflect our company’s Victorian heritage and large number of regional clients. The project is ambitious, encompassing regenerative farming, threatened species recovery and work into bio-links.

How can the community support you?

We are constantly exploring using technology to reduce our footprint.  Adoption of new initiatives such as remote inspections and electronic logbooks are projects we are keen for our business community to adopt.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

We have taken several steps to reduce our overall emissions, whilst also investing in longer term projects such as replacing our fleet of vehicles with hybrid and ultimately electric cars.

Milestones to date include:

  • establishing recycling programs
  • updating and implementing a new sustainability policy
  • changing to a green energy supplier
  • we have begun updating our fleet to hybrid vehicles
  • changing our procurement practices.

What has been the impact of your action?

As this year is the start of our climate neutral journey, we are gathering this data.  Anecdotally, we are confident that our strategies of regional auditors and hybrid vehicles is decreasing our footprint across Victoria.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

We strongly recommend all companies to undertake the certification process.

We found great benefit in partnering with an independent third party, Pangolin Associates, who were able to guide us through the process.
