"Our customers have told us that action on climate change is a top priority for them. "
Type of certification:
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
At Bank Australia, we’ve been acting on climate change for fifteen years. We have been estimating and offsetting our carbon emissions since 2011. From FY 2017-18, we became officially certified.
Why are you carbon neutral?
Our customers have told us that action on climate change is a top priority for them. Being carbon neutral is a key way we can balance out the impact of our operations, and keep working towards reducing our emissions.
What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Climate Active provides a strong framework for tracking, reducing and offsetting our emissions. Climate Active carbon neutral certification demonstrates to our customers that we’re aigned with best practice.
What offset projects do you support?
We purchase offsets from WithOneSeed, which works with subsistence farming communities in Timor Leste to replant and protect their forests. We also purchase offsets from a renewable energy project providing access to clean energy in India, through Biodiverse Carbon Conservation.
Why did you choose this project?
WithOneSeed generates co-benefits that align with our values, like providing opportunities to empower communities on the frontlines of climate change; and encouraging sustainable economic activities for development. Our relationship with this project over the past three years has given us the privilege of seeing the project develop over time.
How can the community support you?
Join the clean money movement. Did you know your choice of bank can have a huge impact on the world? This is because the money you put in your account is used by banks to make loans and investments. The types of loans banks make can go to industries that do good or those that do harm. So where your money goes ultimately shapes the world we all live in.
At Bank Australia we say our money is clean because it is never loaned to those industries that do harm. We also use money to help create positive impact for people, their communities and the planet.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
In May 2019, we became the first bank in Australia to switch to 100% renewable electricity, one year ahead of our 2020 target.
What has been the impact of your action?
In FY 2018-19, we reduced our net electricity emissions by 36% compared to the previous year. We expect to reduce them even further next year as we continue to run on 100% renewable electricity.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Connect with and seek advice from the network of Australia’s climate leaders through the Climate Active Network. Check out other organisations in your industry that have been certified – looking at their public disclosure statement can be a great way to understand what sources of emissions are relevant for you.
