Bates Smart Architects
Bates Smart is a multidisciplinary design firm delivering architecture, interior design, urban design and strategic services since 1853.
For more than 165 years we have promoted socially responsible architecture and design. We understand the social and economic forces currently shaping communities and their impact on built environments of the future. Our founders were the innovators of their time, and we are leaders in the debate on how and where we work, meet, live, learn and heal.
“Carbon neutral certification demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint to protect the natural environment and the community.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since July 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Bates Smart stands behind the science that human-induced climate change is real. The IPCC has identified 2020-2030 as the critical decade for action on greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon neutral certification demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint to protect the natural environment and the community.
We recognise our role to limit the long-term effects of human-induced climate change. As architects of large scale commercial, residential, hospitality, education, health and public spaces, we can play a significant part in improving our future environment and combating rising energy costs.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Our certification has further motivated our organisation to act to reduce our carbon footprint and imbed environmentally sustainable design into our design process.
It assists us in challenging ourselves and our project partners to create environmentally sustainable and innovative solutions for the built environment.
What offset projects do you support?
A fire project in Western Australia and a cookstove project in Malawi, East Africa.
Why did you choose these projects?
These projects reduce carbon emissions and generate cultural, social, health, environmental and economic co-benefits to the communities where they are located. They align with our values by acknowledging and supporting the Traditional Owners of country and promote social equity.
How can your customers support you?
Our clients can invest in projects that prioritise improved environmentally sustainable design (ESD) solutions. Similarly, our suppliers and consultants can focus on the performance of their products and services and how they can contribute to ESD.
We also encourage our business partners to consider obtaining Climate Active certification.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
We have formed a Sustainability Committee to look at initiatives to reduce our emissions including reducing paper usage, air travel and energy consumption.
As a further demonstration of our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, we are founding signatories to the Architects Declare Australia initiative which is committed to addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency.
We will also continue to challenge ourselves to ensure everyday alignment between our work and our climate change actions.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
We found the initial process challenging but very rewarding. It helps to work with registered and experienced consultants.
We look forward to developing our internal data collection processes, reporting systems, and involving people across our business to work on improving our carbon footprint.
