Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Bateup Consultancy was certified in December 2020.
Why are you carbon neutral?
The need to take action on climate change is critical. Participating in Climate Active is important to Bateup Consulting as it empowers our organisation to support climate action whilst meeting organisational needs.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Industry leadership - raising awareness and encouraging behaviour change within the sector.
What offset projects do you support?
A Tiwi Islands savanna burning project.
Why did you choose this project?
A carbon neutral project in Australia was important to our organisation and we wanted to support an Australian organisation particularly after seeing the impact here at home in Australia.
How can the community support you?
Support can be shown through an increase in awareness of climate change and organisational impact. We also recognise that clients will acknowledge the certification and seek to work with Bateup Consulting as a result of these credentials due to the values we hold.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
The first step to take for climate action is to reduce and avoid emissions. Emissions from energy form the highest portion of our carbon footprint. To reduce these emissions, we have an ongoing commitment in place to purchase energy efficient equipment and investigate the purchase of Green Power where possible.
We further target to reduce the need for postage and courier services (both emission sources add up to over 40% of our base year footprint).
We address our transport emissions immediately through the replacement of car journeys by public transport and review our procurement policies for IT equipment in terms of longevity, extended warranties and the potential purchase of refurbished equipment where possible.
What has been the impact of your action?
Whilst this offsetting strategy ensures that our operations are carbon neutral from 1 July 2019 on and our Climate Active certification covers this period, we additionally also decided to purchase four more offset units in order to ensure we remove all of our emissions back to when Bateup Consulting was founded, in December 2018.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Certification is a practical way for businesses of all sizes to engage with their employees and their industry to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and show that it can be achieved.
