Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since August 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
It lines up with our purpose - to feed into the prosperity of our customers and communities, not off it. That’s why we’ve committed to further reduce the carbon and environmental footprint of our operations.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
The Climate Active process is an opportunity for us to learn. This is enhancing our understanding of climate change mitigation and creating opportunities for us to share these insights with our customers and staff. It’s also informing our supplier engagement plan and ESG policies, including how we think about our environmental and carbon footprints and climate change related risks.
What offset project do you support?
A greenfield hydro power project in India.
Why did you choose this project?
We have committed to reducing the carbon and environmental footprint of our operations by:
• Identifying opportunities and setting targets to improve the environmental impact of our operations;
• Engaging and educating our people to take action to realise these opportunities; and
• Learning from best practice by listening to experts and observing other companies
As an example, we are working to reduce business travel to cut our transport emissions. We also offset our carbon emissions from business travel that is necessary by partnering with the not-for-profit carbon offset provider, Greenfleet, through their biodiverse revegetation program.
The Bank’s contribution to the Greenfleet program results in trees being planted across Australia, not just offsetting our travel emissions but improving water quality, reducing soil degradation and providing essential habitat for native wildlife. Since our partnership began with Greenfleet in 2014, more than 113,500 trees have been planted.
In addition, as a significant component of our emissions come from electricity, we have selected a renewable electricity project to assist us in achieving carbon neutrality.
How can customers support you?
Consider our award winning Green Personal Loans. We’ve offered discounted personal loans since 2002 to support our customers to lower their carbon and environmental footprint by purchasing low emission vehicles, solar power systems, solar hot water, grey water treatment plants, top energy saving white goods and other approved investments.
We also offer an investment solution for customers looking for an ethical investment approach, in the Bendigo Socially Responsible Growth Fund. The Fund combines environmental, social, and corporate governance considerations in the selection of investments, while striving for strong, long-term returns for investors.
Customers can opt to receive their statements electronically. Shareholders can elect to receive correspondence electronically.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
We’ve undertaken numerous initiatives over the past two decades including the installation of energy efficient lighting, offsetting our business travel emissions through native vegetation restoration, 5 Star Green Star rated offices in both Bendigo and Adelaide, installation of solar panels on branches and supporting our staff to work from home.
What has been the impact of your action?
Our emissions have fallen 33% in the five years to 30 June 2020.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Through our Climate Change Action Plan we seek to reduce and offset our environmental impact, help our customers minimise their impact, support our customers to transition to lower emissions practices, and find more efficiency in our business. Climate Active helps to support our commitment to backing long-term strategies that contribute to a more sustainable future for all our stakeholders.
