Our vision is to advance a community of wisdom, integrity, service & excellence in and through Christian education. This means that everything we do promotes the ability to develop and apply knowledge, insight, good judgement and experience, integrated with a deep and growing knowledge of the will of God. A community where individuals are supported to live full, productive and purposeful lives, to carry hope in their hearts, to develop an awareness of the social consequences of personal actions and where the wellbeing of all is pursued. It is our desire that each member of our community will engage fearlessly with the truth, responsibly with creation and compassionately with others.
“Our curriculum will engage our students in the benefits of seeking a carbon neutral world in which they live through our providing educational programs on making good decisions for a more sustainable future.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since September 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
We have set our sights on being the first in the private early learning, primary and secondary education sector to become a carbon neutral organisation, recognised as a climate change leader.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Having achieved carbon neutrality for our existing facilities, which include the use of minor carbon offset credits, we are further developing our Emissions Management Plan (EMP) for a detailed renewable energy program. Additionally, the program is centred on ongoing emission reductions over the next two years across our schools and ELC’s, with the intention of intertwining carbon neutrality into our core college educational curriculum. Our curriculum will engage our students in the benefits of seeking a carbon neutral world in which they live through our providing educational programs on making good decisions for a more sustainable future.
What offset projects do you support?
A cookstove project in East Africa, a thermal energy generation project in Vietnam and a forestry project in Brazil.
Why did you choose these project?
The carbon offset projects we have specifically chosen as they provide co-benefits of community support, clean energy provision and forest protection, all in line with developing educational awareness within our students in each of these activities.
How can the community support you?
All suggestions for improving our carbon footprint from the general community and our staff, students and parents will always be warmly welcomed.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
In 2017, in addition to the broader use of recycling of materials and responsible purchasing, and in keeping with our carbon neutral goals, the campus became home to our award winning Zero Net Energy (ZNE) junior school wing, supporting 400 Kinder to Year-4 students, and operating as a fully self-contained energy neutral building housing over 100KW of Solar Panel energy capture and 26.4KWH of intelligent battery storage. The system also sends full energy traffic data to flat panel TV screens across the Junior School in child friendly graphical animated information for the education of the students. This was the first practical step taken towards a complete ZNE college educating all students with a focus on the responsible use of renewable energy.
In 2018 we partnered with EVT Energy in conjunction with an ACT Government Zero Emissions Grant to prototype an educational art form, for the purpose of inspiring imagination and further the education of our students on reducing carbon emissions in an engaging manner. This took the form of a “Solar Tree” integrated with intelligent energy storage to allow for adding a range of independent stand-alone solar powered products and services; fully charged support 2-5 days of autonomous energy supply.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
It is critical, in considering Climate Active certification, to engage early with professional environmental auditors, who have worked with a range of organisations in Australia seeking carbon neutral certification, ensuring that you have taken all the right courses of action required to achieve your ultimate climate action goals. It makes the entire process far more professionally streamlined; reducing errors and wasted effort.
