Type of certification

Organisation and Product.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since February 2022.

Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?

Capital Brewing Co. believes we all have a responsibility to look after our surroundings and it is widely accepted that our society needs to work quickly to avoid irreversible, catastrophic changes to our environment. We are choosing to provide our customers with the option to continue to enjoy an ice cold beer in the knowledge that it’s not warming the planet and in doing so, aim to inspire change throughout the brewing industry.

What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Carbon neutral certification focusses our business to continually improve our practices and processes to reduce our impact on the environment. Without a healthy environment, we won’t have the raw ingredients required to make beer!

Becoming the first brewery in the country to be certified at both the organisation and product level has instilled a great deal of pride in our staff.

We hope that we can provide inspiration and knowledge to other breweries around the country to drive change throughout the industry, and to that end have developed a template in partnership with Climate Active and Pangolin Associates to make it easier and cheaper for other breweries to follow.

What offset projects do you support?

A vegetation project in Victoria stapled to a biomass generation project in China.

Why did you choose these projects?

We were drawn to the Orana Natural Capital Project as it was one of the closest carbon offset projects to our brewery and is set amongst farmland that produces raw ingredients we use in our beer. Stapled to a Verified Carbon Standard renewable energy project in China, Orana Park is also one of Australia’s largest soil carbon projects, restoring biodiversity along a 33km stretch of the Loddon River near Bendigo, and creating a 200ha open grassy woodland predator-proof sanctuary to protect critically endangered species.

How can consumers support you?

Drink certified carbon neutral beer and enjoy every sip in the knowledge that you're protecting local biodiversity, helping fund renewable energy projects through carbon credits and not contributing to climate change!

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Capital Brewing Co. has implemented numerous energy, water, waste and chemical reduction strategies and processes across its operations. This includes initiatives such as 100% renewable electricity at the brewery, the diversion of 709 tonnes annually of spent grain, hops, and yeast to an organic farm, and a new water-cooled refrigerant plant with low GWP (global warming potential) refrigerant. Initiatives currently in development to further improve environmental performance include an automated Clean-In-Place system to recycle water and chemicals used to clean brewery vessels multiple times, and the transition to an all electric vehicle fleet.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

It’s not as hard or expensive as you might think. We’ve paved the way for other breweries to follow suit by developing a template that makes it easier and cheaper for other breweries to calculate their emissions. Get on board. Let’s lead as an industry!
