Carbon Market Institute 6 th Australasian Emission Reduction Summit 2019

The Carbon Market Institute is the peak industry body for climate change and business. As a membership organisation, we share knowledge and facilitate connections between business, policy makers and thought leaders to drive the evolution of carbon markets towards a significant and positive impact on climate change.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

CMI has had its annual Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit certified carbon neutral for four consecutive years.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality through offsetting are fundamentally important to CMI. We represent the majority of players in the Australian domestic offset sector and are proponents and stewards of the carbon market and market-mechanisms, endorsing offset schemes that generate real abatement across the landscape, and generate jobs, revenues and additional benefits for regional and rural communities.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Climate Active certification is a critical step to meaningful transition to a net-zero and negative emissions economy. CMI is a champion of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement’s climate and net-zero emissions goal and our organisational actions must align with our values and emissions reduction trajectory. As representatives of the carbon market players and market integrity, supporting the market is a central mission of CMI.

What offset projects do you support?

We endeavour to support a range of Australian and international projects that bring about a maximum of co-benefits, that is positive outcomes, beyond carbon, such as social and cultural, economic and environmental benefits that occur as a result of the project.

Why did you choose these projects?

Our approach to project choice is that a project should incentivise sustainable land use practices, maximise co-benefit outcomes and be a force for positive change. An example is savannah burning projects that can assist in supporting remote Indigenous communities by providing a steady source of income through ‘on country’ jobs, as well as building on traditional practice and preserving knowledge. Internationally, offset projects can provide support to local communities with sustainable development benefits like providing safe drinking water, protecting forests, improving health or providing local jobs.

How can the community support you?

CMI encourages its members and the wider business community to aspire to carbon neutrality and support offset schemes that bring about significant positive outcomes. We have developed a Carbon Farming Industry Roadmap that outlines a pathway to building a $24 billion industry employing over 20,000 people with most benefits for regional Australia.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Each year CMI endeavours to support low-carbon activities and look for low-carbon options within the event boundary that can contribute to an overall reduction in the emissions generated from the Summit. We offset only unavoidable emissions and are looking to become carbon neutral “plus” in future, so as to be part of climate repair, not just neutrality.

What has been the impact of your action?

Reducing carbon emissions, carbon drawdown through land sector project support and leveraging carbon markets for positive, measurable impact to planet and people.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Every business should have a carbon strategy and set a pathway towards zero-net emissions, in line with the Paris Agreement – both to manage future risks but also to capitilise on opportunities in the transition. Certification provides a best-practice framework to achieve carbon neutrality and is a gage of the rigor and integrity of the process. There are enormous positive benefits of carbon neutral certification, along with supporting positive impact projects including; energy and cost savings, improved employee engagement and customer/ community connection, increased market profile, a competitive advantage and alignment with CSR/ SDG corporate values.
