City of Sydney

Every day 1.3 million people live, work, do business, go out and study within the City of Sydney. The relatively small local government area creates more than 7 per cent of Australia’s gross domestic product and is rich in globally recognised landmarks, cultural and financial institutions. It has been a key place for both the Aboriginal custodians of the land and the migration of Sydney’s newest residents. Sustainable Sydney 2030 outlines the aspiration of our community and businesses for our local government area to be an environmental leader on a global scale.

“Playing our role and encouraging others to reduce emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

In 2011, the City of Sydney was proud to become the first government body in Australia to achieve certified carbon neutral status.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Our community overwhelmingly wants a response to climate change. Reducing emissions, adding renewable energy and offsetting forms our trajectory to net zero. Carbon neutrality is also a corporate responsibility, we are leading by example and playing our role and encouraging others to reduce emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Climate Active certification is a demonstration of the City’s green credentials and leadership.

What offset projects do you support?

Offset projects change year on year. To date projects are predominantly related to renewable energy projects in developing countries.

Why did you choose these projects?

The City selects offset projects based on standard, price and co-benefits.

How can the community support you?

We’d answer this question more in terms of how we’d like to see the community support the transition to net zero. In this regard the community could go renewable at home and at work through solar PV or offsite. Other actions they could adopt include reducing their energy via energy efficiency work, divesting, and joining the City’s sustainability programs - Smart Green Apartments, Building Tune-up, CitySwitch, Better Building Partnership, and Sustainable Destination Partnership. They could also get their apartment or office rated, offset their emissions, plant trees or grow green roofs and walls, and opt for sustainable transport such as walking, cycling and public transport over private vehicle use.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

The City is doing many things to reduce emissions. They include installing rooftop solar across our building portfolio (Sydney Town Hall, childcare centres, libraries, pools, parks, etc.) We have also entered into strategic partnerships through CNCA, C40, and Cities Power Partnership., In January 2020, the City will transition 100 per cent of our electricity use to renewables.

What has been the impact of your action?

The City has reduced its total emissions by 25 per cent since 2006 despite an increase in service levels to the community.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Certification provides confidence in data, methodology and assumptions. Be sure in your message and to inspire stakeholders.
