Ethical Partners Funds Management
Ethical Partners Funds Management is a boutique Australian Equities Ethical Investment fund manager. We have a dual focus on performance and investing ethically, as well as a strong focus on advocacy, engagement and leveraging our shareholder voice to call for change in ASX companies attention to how they impact people and the planet.
“We believe that climate change is, and will continue, to materially affect economies and therefore the investment savings of our clients, and the society and environment in which both our holdings operate and we live. Therefore, we want to do our part in reducing our impact on the climate by going carbon neutral.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since September 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
We believe that climate change is, and will continue, to materially affect economies and therefore the investment savings of our clients, and the society and environment in which both our holdings operate and we live. Therefore, we want to do our part in reducing our impact on the climate by going carbon neutral. We also engage deeply with our portfolio companies about being proactive in how they manage their climate change risks, and strongly believe that we also need to be accountable and transparent in doing the same.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Our carbon neutral certification allows us to be accountable to our clients for our own carbon footprint, and to demonstrate to the companies with whom we engage our own efforts to address climate change. We believe it will also help us to further engage our staff in efforts to reduce our own footprint and increase our internal consciousness on continued progress towards net zero emissions.
What offset project do you support?
A biodigester program in Cambodia.
Why did you choose this project?
The Ethical Partners Tatrai Giving Fund was created at the inception of our business with the purpose and mandate to give back to society, and to help enable children and youth to have the best possible chance to thrive. The Tatrai Giving Fund is named after a school in remote rural Cambodia that was one of the first projects we funded. Given our links and passion for Cambodia, the Cambodia National Biodigester Programme was a natural fit. We also believe that an environmental offset that also serves a social function is very aligned with our emphasis at Ethical Partners on both social and environmental issues.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
We are looking at ways to increase our renewable energy input, and to reduce/minimise waste. We have been conscious to ensure that our office space is in energy efficient buildings, and we are also beginning to utilise circular economy-based initiatives such as Simply Cups Coffee Cup recycling. We have also focussed on implementing recycling throughout our office space, minimising resource use, removing single use plastic from the office kitchen and educating our staff on how they can help reduce our impact. Additionally, we engage continually with all our portfolio companies, other investors, policy makers, government and media on issues from waste to emissions reduction to climate change policy and reporting.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
We believe that certification is a small effort in the quest to reducing our impact on the environment whereby every person and every organisation has an important role to play. We also believe that decreasing a company’s emissions footprint is a critical part of any business’ strategy to transition to a low carbon economy, and we strongly encourage all businesses to consider how they are ensuring a smooth, early transition to a low carbon economy in a transparent and accountable way using certifications or schemes such as this.
