Five Founders Beef
Five Founders beef is produced by the North Australian Pastoral Company (NAPCO), one of Australia's largest privately owned cattle companies. NAPCO currently manages over 6.1 million hectares, in both Queensland and the Northern Territory. NAPCO also operates the Wainui Feedlot and Farm on the Darling Downs. Combined, this property portfolio supports approximately 200 000 head of cattle.
“We would recommend certification to any business considering it. Consumers are certainly seeking solutions to help them make more climate active choices.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since April 2019.
Why are you carbon neutral?
Consumers are becoming more mindful about the food we eat, and how it gets to the table. As consumers, we are more familiar with the idea of fresh and organic produce, or brands and products that offer more environmentally-friendly options.
Presently, carbon neutral meats are still relatively new to the market. So, for those of us who are looking to reduce the environmental impact of our dietary choices, while enjoying a good, tender and flavourful steak, Five Founders presents a carbon-conscious choice for all meat lovers.
Carbon emissions produced by Five Founders from paddock to plate, have been measured and offset – this means that even the transportation of Five Founders beef from Australia to the store to your plate, has been accounted and compensated for.
What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
When launching Five Founders branded beef, our consumer research was resounding that animal welfare and environmental care was paramount to meat-lovers. It was important for The North Australian Pastoral Company to ensure our company launched a branded beef article that matched the values of the business and the mindsets of the consumer, which is why we realised value in taking a leadership role within this category to become Australia’s first Carbon Neutral certified beef.
Of course, we will see great benefit throughout our supply chain and also cost savings from initiatives such as replacing diesel powered bores with solar power and other renewable energies, feed efficiency to increase live weight gain, and participating in legume trials to measure potential methane reduction.
What offset projects do you support?
We support Australian regenerative vegetation offset projects as well as renewable energy projects in China.
How can the community support you?
Consumers can support us by choosing Five Founders Australian beef, Australia’s First Carbon Neutral certified beef. Our company values ensure animal welfare, land management, and regeneration is at the heart of our operation, and Five Founders beef is for those carbon-conscious meat-lovers who want to make a positive change for the future.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
We are some of the ways in which we consume energy on farm. For example we are converting over to solar energy and utilising other renewable energies where possible, ensuring we burn less fossil fuels. We are also planting additional legume-based crops which sequesters more carbon in the soil. When the opportunity arises, we will trial feed additives that reduce the amount of methane emitted from our cattle.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
We would recommend certification to any business considering it. Consumers are certainly seeking solutions to help them make more climate active choices.
