Hither & Yon
Hither & Yon is owned and operated by the Leask family in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Our clan motto is “by virtue, I grow” which is how we farm our land, with care and creativity, from soil to glass.
The most important things in our business is our soil and people, we practice regenerative agriculture every day to have constant motion and life cycle, for our produce and brand – wines that go down easy for how scarce they are.
“Our passion is to make better wines with a lighter footprint, and carbon neutral certification was a way for us to translate what we do in our vineyard into a real stamp on our product.”
Type of certification
Organisation and Product.
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since February 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Our passion is to make better wines with a lighter footprint, and carbon neutral certification was a way for us to translate what we do in our vineyard into a real stamp on our product.
A way of sharing our philosophy and a trust mark for our consumers to respect that we are real growers and makers who care most about the future environment.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
We believe carbon neutral certification will drive change and continuous improvement in our business, always looking for better ways of combating climate change and lessening our carbon footprint.
This will have a positive engagement with our team, community, consumers, and a legacy for our next generation.
Business benefits will include reduced energy and fuel bills, new supply chain opportunities, strategic plan vision and action, pure and simple brand message, and collaborating with our carbon neutral organisations.
What offset projects do you support?
A wind power project and a hydro power project in India.
Why did you choose these projects?
We liked these projects because they improve the health and education of their regional communities, contribute to the UN’s sustainable development goals and are a clean, renewable source of energy.
How can consumers support you?
If you really like what we are doing, please share it with your family, friends and feed back to us - so we can all spread the message of climate change and carbon neutral action benefits, sooner rather than later, our community is really important.
We hope that other small family business owners will be encouraged and particularly, those in agriculture like us.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
Hither & Yon have purchased additional biodiversity offsets through Greenfleet. These offsets support local Australian native reforestation projects with strong environmental outcomes.
The investment that Hither & Yon has made in these offsets contributes directly to future carbon sequestration. Additional benefits of the Greenfleet projects include reducing salinity and soil erosion, restoring habitat for local wildlife and ensuring a greener future for our next generation.
What has been the impact of your action?
2021 will be the first year of our carbon neutral certification journey, so we now have a carbon emission base line from FY20 which we aim to reduce by at least 10% this year.
For our land, we will continue to work hard to increase carbon sequestration, continuously measure this, and practice our regenerative agriculture.
For our products, we will seek out better packaging solutions and providers, reduce our travel, increase our e-commerce, recycle all our waste.
