“Carbon neutral certification ensures we remain publicly accountable for our corporate emission reduction plans.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
JANA joined the Climate Active Network in March 2022, with our operations certified as carbon neutral from 2020.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
JANA recognises the need for global action towards net zero emissions and is seeking to use its position within the investment ecosystem to advocate for an orderly and just transition to a low carbon future. For JANA, carbon neutral certification ensures we remain publicly accountable for our corporate emission reduction plans and active in our collaboration with other organisations as we work on the long term changes that will benefit our clients and society as a whole.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Our goal is to provide investment advice that is aligned with net zero emissions as a default. We see carbon neutrality of our own business operations as foundational to this effort.
What offset projects do you support?
A forestry project in Brazil, a forestry project in Papua New Guinea, and a wind power project in India. Additionally, we have also purchased an additional 396 tonnes of biodiversity offsets through Greenfleet.
Why did you choose these projects?
We support the need to protect natural capital and proven sources of carbon sequestration through regenerating forest areas and curbing deforestation in Brazil and Papua New Guinea. JANA is also restoring forests here in Australia by purchasing additional biodiversity offsets through Greenfleet. We are also supplementing a wind power project in India.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
The GHG audit of JANA’s emissions in 2019 under business-as-usual conditions, and 2020, impacted by the restrictions of the COVID pandemic, provided excellent contrasting data which aided us in understanding the true sources of our emissions.
JANA was already doing many of the foundational things right, with 87% of our staff’s annual commute to work completed via public transport, walking or riding a bike.
Looking forward, JANA’s focus now shifts toward the common larger sources of emissions for a professional services firm, namely grid electricity and business travel. JANA is switching its office locations to green energy and working with our suppliers to increase awareness of their energy impacts and opportunities.
JANA recognises that travel is essential to our business model but has introduced policies to encourage and highlight the work life, time and emissions benefits of traveling smarter and more purposefully.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Make a start and continuously improve. Understanding your own emissions helps prioritise where you can use your influence to start making positive changes for both your own organisation and those you touch.
