Koskela is an innovative and inspiring Australian furniture, design and lifestyle brand established in 2000. Exceptional design, ethical manufacturing and social impact is what drives us.

In a world crammed with stuff we can only justify our existence by making the best products we possibly can. Koskela furniture is proudly made in Australia, which has a threefold advantage: superior quality, fair labour conditions, and reduced freight miles.

Koskela is deeply committed to using our design and production skills to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and makers. We facilitate collaborations between artists working in Indigenous-owned art centres and our team, to create new contemporary design products and concepts.

By supporting Koskela you are supporting an entire network of Australian manufacturers, makers and artists.

“We believe it is imperative for all businesses to demonstrate leadership in eliminating emissions.”

Type of certification

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since August 2020.

Why are you carbon neutral?

In December 2019, Koskela pledged to be net zero by 2030. We made this announcement during the UN Climate Change Conference, COP25.

We believe the science shows that a 1.5°C increase in average global temperature is the limit to reduce the worst impacts for our planet and its inhabitants. At the current trajectory, it is estimated we will reach this limit as early as 2030.

We believe, therefore, that it is imperative for all businesses to demonstrate leadership in eliminating emissions, drawing down carbon, and ensuring a just transition for displaced workers and communities to a net zero emissions economy.

In addition, we believe it is imperative to use the power of our collective voice to advocate for policy changes necessary to remove impediments and align incentives that will drive meaningful climate action.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification enables Koskela to be net zero and help mitigate the potentially catastrophic effects of climate change. The certification creates a framework for Koskela to annually measure our carbon emissions and work towards reducing these as much as possible.

What offset projects do you support?

An Aboriginal carbon fund project and a wind power project in Satara.

Why did you choose these projects?

We chose the Aboriginal Carbon Fund as we have a strong commitment to reconciliation with Australia’s Indigenous peoples. The wind power project was chosen as it had benefits in addition to its positive environmental impact through job creation, economic well being and technology advances.

How can consumers support you?

Buy once, buy well. Choose Koskela for quality, Australian-made furniture that you can customise to suit your style. After a period of normal wear and tear, opt to refurbish rather than replace your piece. Our hope is if you buy a Koskela product you treasure it for life.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Koskela has a 12-year partnership with Rainforest Rescue, supporting their ‘Buy Back and Protect Forever’ program.

Koskela is also working towards Koskela Second Life. We intend to create a second-hand market whereby we buy back used Koskela furniture, restore, and resell for a reduced price. This initiative will extend the lifespan of our products and divert them from landfill.

What has been the impact of your action?

As of mid-2017, Koskela’s Rainforest Rescue contributions have saved an entire hectare of Daintree lowland rainforest, and we are on our way to save another hectare by 2020. In addition, we helped fund the planting of 3,577 trees to regenerate damaged rainforest. This has helped remove approximately 9,000kg of planet warming CO2 from our atmosphere every year and helps restore our world heritage listed rainforests.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Certification with Climate Active is a great way to enable your customers to feel confident that your carbon neutral claims are credible.
