Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since October 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Lexus has initiated the movement towards electrification and carbon neutrality long before the current focus in the automotive industry. The 2005 RX 400h was the first luxury hybrid in the world, and with over 2 million electrified vehicles sold globally (as of May 2021), our mission of balancing driving performance with environmental sensitivity is going according to plan.
In 2020, 33% of the Lexus models sold globally were of the electrified variety and since 2005, Lexus electrified vehicles have contributed to a cumulative reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 19 million tonnes. This reduction is equivalent to the combined CO2 output of approximately 300,000 passenger cars each year for the past 15 years.
In Australia, our journey started back in 2006 with the launch of our first hybrid vehicle, the GS 450h and hybrid vehicles represent 38% of our sales mix (as of Oct 2021).
The local launch of our first BEV, the Lexus UX 300e presented us with the perfect opportunity to reduce carbon footprint in other business areas and trial our efforts in the marketing and operational activities, and therefore making a further positive environmental impact.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
The carbon neutral certification under Climate Active demonstrates our commitment to take climate actions and is a positive step towards our global target of a carbon neutral future by 2050.
In addition, we are aiming to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle such as materials, parts, and vehicle manufacturing along with logistics, driving, and disposal/recycling. The Climate Active certification for our UX EV event is a testament of our further effort on this 360-degree approach.
What offset projects do you support?
A fire abatement project in the Northern Territory, Australia, a forestry project in Queensland, Australia, and a human-induced regeneration project in New South Wales, Australia.
Why did you choose these projects?
Our chosen portfolio features projects that are based in regional areas of Australia and across different states.
Finding offset projects that were Australia specific was our priority, to ensure a direct and authentic impact could be made in Lexus Australia’s own back yard.
How can your customers support you?
By choosing to drive our low emission vehicles.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
By 2050, Lexus is committed to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle.
Lexus Australia currently sources vehicles from Japan and sources parts from both international and local suppliers. Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan) and Toyota Motor Corporation Australia’s policies encourage sustainable and efficient shipping and logistics of our products and parts to reduce our carbon footprint.
Lexus Australia has four warehouses located nationally for parts storage. Our Melbourne facility is equipped with automated guided vehicles, driverless forklifts, hydrogen fuel cell forklift, smart trolleys and conveyors. Our Sydney parts distribution centre is a 5-star green performance rated building powered by 100% renewable energy.
Additionally, since 2013 we have been running a hybrid HV Battery recycling program that will reward customers for each hybrid HV battery returned to a Lexus Dealer for recycling.
Lexus Australia will continue to lead the steady growth of electrified vehicles and the reduction of CO2 emissions in line with our global corporate mission of carbon neutrality and Sustainable Development Goals.
What has been the impact of your action?
Lexus Australia will endeavour to discuss the impact of our activities and reduced emissions in the post-event report after the activities have been completed.
