Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since March 2019.
Why are you carbon neutral?
As a health services organisation, Medibank recognises the science of climate change and its impacts on human health. We are committed to playing our part in reducing the impacts of climate change and in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Carbon neutral certification allows us to fully understand the impacts of our business operations on the environment, and put in place strategies to reduce our overall impact. This includes ensuring our premises are environmentally efficient, reducing waste across our business, identifying energy savings, and engaging our employees in actions to reduce our carbon footprint.
What offset projects do you support?
West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement Project, the Southern Aurukun Savanna Burning Project, and wind based power generation in India.
Why did you choose these projects?
Our carbon offsetting approach utilises a mix of Australian and international carbon offsets that deliver significant environmental benefit, support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and deliver health benefits to the communities in which they are based.
How can the community support you?
Our customers can support us by increasing their awareness of the impacts of climate change on human health, and taking practical steps to reduce their own environmental impact.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
Medibank has undertaken a number of initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This includes ensuring our premises are environmentally efficient, setting public targets around carbon neutrality and responsible investment, and setting up an employee-led environmental sustainability working group made up of employees from across the organisation and dedicated to taking climate action. In addition, we are acting on opportunities to reduce our emissions by improving operational efficiencies and reducing our waste, actively shifting to a low-carbon investment portfolio across both our domestic and international equity investments and educating and engaging our people about the environmental impact of their work and home activities.
What has been the impact of your action?
Medibank achieved carbon neutrality for the first time in 2019. We have also updated our responsible investment policy to reflect the transition of our investment portfolio into low carbon equity investments, both domestically and internationally.
