OVO Energy was founded in the UK in 2009, growing to become the 2nd largest energy retailer in the country. We started life with three simple words: Cheaper. Greener. Simpler. Now, over a decade later, and with a far greater ability to make an impact, we're aware that the climate crisis demands an urgent response. We have committed to net zero carbon operations by 2030, in a bid to lead the transition to a zero carbon energy system. In late 2019, we launched in the Australian energy market, providing electricity to customers in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. Our approach in Australia focusses on renewable energy content and ensuring that all of our customers are carbon neutral, at no extra charge.
“Our mission is using technology to power human progress with clean affordable energy for everyone.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since April 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Our mission is using technology to power human progress with clean affordable energy for everyone. We are working towards zero carbon living and have an ambitious plan to deliver this across all of our businesses globally by 2030. On its own carbon offsetting isn’t going to end the climate crisis, but it’s a very important part of the solution. In Australia, we want to encourage a mindset shift - that saving the planet doesn't have to cost more money, and consumers recognise the role that businesses need to play in fighting the climate crisis.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Every customer that signs up to OVO Energy will automatically receive 100% carbon neutral electricity at no extra charge.
What offset projects do you support?
An wastewater treatment with Biogas production project in Thailand.
Why did you choose these projects?
When choosing projects to support we have developed a clear set of criteria, focussed on forest conservation projects, reforestation / afforestation, peatland restoration, biogas and anaerobic digestion projects.
How can consumers support you?
By switching to OVO Energy every customer receives 100% carbon neutral electricity at no extra charge. The more customers that switch to us, the better it is for the environment.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
From a proposition perspective, we incorporate 10% GreenPower at no extra charge, meaning that every OVO Energy customer is contributing to the development of new renewable energy in Australia. We also offer customers the ability to upgrade to 100% GreenPower, at a small additional charge per month. As a global business, we believe that technology is the key to driving meaningful change; we focus on making renewable energy more accessible and affordable to a larger audience, increasing the uptake of electric vehicles, solar, batteries and by developing our own in-house technology platforms to better meet customer electricity demand. In a World that has an ever increasing requirement for the use of electricity, decarbonisation must be driven by advancing technology.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Develop a product that meets the needs of your customers whilst simultaneously helping address the climate crisis.
