Our company Roundwood Solutions has been the largest producer of timber fence post material in Australia for a number of years. We produce up to 60,000m3 per year with all our timber coming from plantation pine forests from our local area which was planted generations ago, specifically for jobs into the future.
We decided 3 years ago to value add our own timber, build our company brand and invest in our own treatment plant. Additionally, this uncovered a point of difference to the traditional current applications in the market that were not environmentally friendly. Through partaking in this process, we uncovered a new product, which is now trademarked as Tanapost®. We are an example to all organisations within the industry, bringing superior ecological solutions to our agricultural sector.
“Through partnering with Climate Active to be certified carbon neutral, Tanapost® could be a huge advantage to others in the agricultural sector who aspire to lower their carbon footprint to achieve carbon neutrality.”
Type of certification
Tanapost ® is a water based Creosote product and is the best agricultural product development we have seen throughout 40 years in the timber industry. When considering the millions of fence posts and vineyard trellising in Australia, it was noted that other wood treatments have no end of life solution and carry toxic air borne effects on our communities including bushfires, soil degradation and health and safety issues from initial handling. The benefits of Tanapost® include its dry to touch texture, contains no heavy metals, there is no residue that burns to the skin from handling the product, there is little to no leaching, lack of noxious odour which alleviates headaches, sinus irritation and breathing implications and is inherently fire retarding which implies once the fire front has gone past, the post will self-extinguish. We promise to our customers that we take back our product at its end of life and put it back through our wood gasifier to burn. This extracts the heat and drives our steamer which dries our timber in the first place. This is so our timber can be treated with our carbon based wood preservative we call Tanapost®. In our gasifier, the residue from the process is Biochar, which has the ability to store carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since September 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
To show other organisations how they can have superior ecological product solutions to force positive environmental change for the future.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
To lower our carbon footprint and elevate our image, potentially bypassing barriers to markets.
What offset project do you support?
A landfill gas and electricity generation project in Turkey.
How can your customers support you?
Through purchasing and demanding more ecological products across the whole supply chain.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
By generating our own electricity from our steam generation and also through exporting energy to the grid.
What has been the impact of your action?
Reduced emissions and creating tours for other parties to see the example we are setting, which will be continual for as long as we are known for our stance on environmental improvement practices.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Do it! Consumers are endorsing net zero and sustainable practises and the Government is enabling climate action.
