“The carbon neutral certification process has allowed us to better understand the impacts of operations, and to develop strategies to reduce our overall emissions.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since January 2022.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
SEEK is committed to reducing emissions and supports the objective of keeping global warming below pre-industrial levels. As an online business, SEEK is an energy taker with a relatively low emissions profile. Regardless, we take accountability for our impact on climate change and our role in the transition to a low carbon economy.
Achieving our first carbon neutral certification for SEEK’s operations in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) is the beginning of our journey towards minimising our impact and is a key element of our climate commitments.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
The carbon neutral certification process has allowed us to better understand the impacts of operations, and to develop strategies to reduce our overall emissions. This includes efficiency measures, such as minimising travel and waste, and purchasing renewable energy.
Certification helps us to demonstrate our sustainability commitment to our key stakeholders. It improves our staff engagement through an employee value proposition aligned to their expectations. Certification also allows us to support projects in conservation, biodiversity and clean energy generation.
What offset projects do you support?
A restoration and conservation project in Indonesia, a biodiversity land conservation project in Victoria, Australia, and a wind-based power generation project in China.
Why did you choose these projects?
We aim to support projects that are high-impact land based projects and our carbon offsetting approach also reflects the location of some of SEEK’s main employment platforms, and the location of these platforms will continue to be a focus for the program. This is reflected in our blend of carbon offsets which predominantly comprises biodiversity conservation in Australia and forestry habitat protection in Indonesia, as well as supporting a renewable energy project in China.
Our carbon offsetting approach utilises a mix of Australian and international carbon offsets that deliver environmental benefit, support conservation, and deliver benefits to the communities in which they are based.
How can customers support you?
Our customers as individuals can support us in reducing broader impact on the environment by taking their own small steps to reduce their environmental footprint.
Both our suppliers and hirer organisations can support us by implementing strategies to reduce their own emissions to support the broader aim of reducing emissions of partners and across SEEK’s value chain.
Our shareholders can also elect to receive their communications from SEEK’s share registry electronically to reduce the impacts associated with paper, printing and mailings.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
We have committed to develop a science-aligned target by 2025 and achieve net zero emissions across all scope emissions by 2030. To progress towards these targets, we will formalise an emissions reduction strategy during FY2022. We will disclose further information in our 2022 Sustainability Report.
Meanwhile, our offices are managed with a commitment to minimising waste and energy use. Our largest office, the new corporate headquarters in Melbourne has a 6 star Green Star rating in sustainable design and a 5 star NABERS energy performance rating. The ongoing operation of this building has a strong sustainability focus.
Technologies connect SEEK offices, partners and service providers which assists with reducing business travel. Our data is predominantly stored in cloud-based platforms which use fewer services and less power compared with internal data centres.
What has been the impact of your action?
We achieved carbon neutrality for the first time for FY2021 for our Australian and New Zealand businesses. We plan to extend carbon neutrality to include our international operations for FY2022.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Better understanding your emissions as part of carbon neutrality certification is a key step towards reducing your impact.
Aligned with an emissions reduction strategy, certification helps focus organisational efforts on reducing impact and improving efficiencies.
