Type of certification
Organisation and Service.
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since July 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Smartways recognises we are members of a community and are on a continuous improvement journey to play our part in operating sustainably. Smartways only provides services to entities in the healthcare sector – a sector committed to improving the health of our community – and as such we are committed to offering a logistics solution that allows the healthcare ecosystem to balance out the carbon footprint of healthcare freight and logistics needs. We wanted to be the first carbon neutral healthcare logistics company.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
We sought feedback from our stakeholders and we think achieving this milestone will be viewed favourably by them as sustainability is a very important topic for our internal and external stakeholders. Furthermore, our medical device, life science and pharmaceutical clients (together with their clients being hospitals, clinics and laboratories) will be able to offset their Scope 3 value chain emissions by using Smartways services.
What offset projects do you support?
West Arnhem land fire abatement projects in Australia, wind power projects in India, global forestry projects, renewable energy projects in China and wind farm projects in Turkey.
Why did you choose these projects?
The portfolio of offset projects were chosen for a range of reasons including the culturally diverse nature of our stakeholders and the geographic footprint of our existing and future operations. Moreover, support of Indigenous communities, protection of native forests and support of renewable energy also aligned with our values.
How can your customers support you?
By choosing to partner with Smartways, our clients and potential clients not only receive a high value add specialist healthcare logistics service but also can balance out the carbon footprint associated with their downstream logistics function and needs.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
Smartways aims to launch real time carbon emission calculations that will allow our clients to choose, at the time of selecting Smartways services, the most sustainable service that meets their service needs. We are also on a continuous improvement journey to optimise our services and processes to reduce carbon emissions.
What has been the impact of your action?
Smartways neutralised approximately 6,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the fiscal year 2020/2021. Smartways is committed to being carbon neutral and offsetting 100% of our logistics services and as such provide a carbon-neutral service to our clients (and their clients), thereby offsetting their Scope 3 indirect, downstream emissions.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Achieving certification is indeed a significant commitment in time and resources, but real change and impact requires commitment from many.
