Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since May 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
With a background growing up in Tasmania during the NO DAMS debates of the 1980s, it is no surprise that our practice is named for TERROIR - a French term used to describe the specific constellation of environmental and cultural conditions that define any one place. Our work is a study in making judgements around how one values the impact of building in a place.
Becoming carbon neutral is therefore a key step to ensuring our commitment to our core beliefs, not only in our day to day business activities but also into our designs to create a better future for us all. To date, we have been cynical around the corporatisation of carbon credits and it is only now and with your program that we feel informed enough to make this choice knowing that it will actually make a difference.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
TERROIR is fortunate to have an industry recognition that allows us to offer leadership in key areas. Through our carbon neutral certification we will be positioned as one of the few architectural practices that are making a real difference to the environment by taking the extra step and joining the Climate Active and meeting the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standards. We hope others will follow.
What offset projects do you support?
A wind power project in India.
Why did you choose this project?
TERROIR chose renewable energy as our focus to achieve carbon neutral certification, and supported our local native reforestation, as we believe both of these are important to our environmental future.
Purchasing carbon credits is not enough, if we want to improve the current status of the environment for everyone, and to truly make a difference we all need to take the extra step and also offset our future emissions by projects that sequestrate carbon. With this in mind TERROIR chose to partner with Greenfleet when purchasing our approved credits and offsets.
How can the community/customers support you?
By choosing with their wallets! Just as finance is deserting coal, we hope that clients will insist on only dealing with companies that have joined Climate Active and meet the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standards.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
In addition to joining Climate Active, and looking at ways to continuously reduce our carbon footprint in our day to day business activities. We believe that we play a crucial role in shaping a future with no net negative impact on climate through our designs and commitment to sustainability.
