Being carbon neutral has enhanced our brand, attracted and engaged employees and low carbon suppliers and saved more money than it has cost.

Type of certification

Organisation, Event and Building.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since December 2015.

Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?

We believe that climate change will affect low income and disadvantaged people disproportionally and therefore we believe that reducing our carbon emissions is the right thing to do for our clients, employees and the wider community. Becoming a carbon neutral organisation was a strategic commitment for Uniting Communities and this commitment continues as we strive for Net Zero by 2035. Subsequently we have run a certified carbon neutral public event and our flagship building U City is also certified carbon neutral.

What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Being carbon neutral has enhanced our brand, attracted and engaged employees and low carbon suppliers and saved more money than it has cost. This money goes back into our core services.

What offset projects do you support?

Since becoming carbon neutral in 2015, we have purchased approximately 20,000 offsets supporting Australian and International offset projects including:

A wind power project in India, a wind farm project in Taiwan bundled with a conservation project in South Australia, a forestry project in Tasmania, Australia, and a revegetation project in South Australia.

Why did you choose these projects?

These projects fit with our social and environmental values in delivering local biodiversity and employment outcomes, investment in local communities and connections with Traditional Owners.

How can the community support you?

Use our services and facilities, including our state-of-the-art hotel and function centre at U City Adelaide. Promote and support our Lifeline service and Goodwill stores. You can also support our cause by encouraging others to follow our lead in reducing carbon emissions and heading to net zero.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

We have had annual emissions reduction plans and implemented a wide range of building projects, behaviour change, policy and procurement initiatives covering most emissions sources within our boundary. We give presentations to tell our story and encourage others to maximise their emissions reduction.

What has been the impact of your action?

We have reduced our emissions by over 30%. Financial savings are harder to quantify however we are confident that our emissions reduction actions have saved over $1.5 million in operating costs.

We have seen evidence that our Climate Active status has improved our ability to influence other organisations to follow.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Before committing to certification, carefully consider how you will incorporate carbon measurement and reduction into your business governance, operations and strategy. Make sure your Board and senior management are committed and that a budget is allocated each year. Ensure you have resourcing and take advice from a Registered Consultant. Being carbon neutral is not to be taken lightly but is a big achievement which pays dividends.
