Uniting Communities

Uniting Communities is an inclusive not-for-profit organisation working alongside more than 30,000 South Australians each year as they strive for brighter futures and great lives. We value diversity and are committed to providing respectful, accessible services to all.

“We believe it’s the right thing to do for our clients, employees and others. We are committed to leading a low carbon future.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2015.

Why are you carbon neutral?

It’s an organisation commitment. We believe it’s the right thing to do for our clients, employees and others. We are committed to leading a low carbon future.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Enhanced brand, engagement of employees and clients, saving money on energy and waste, operational efficiency, meeting funding commitments, engaging our supply chain, and discharging directors’ duties in relation to climate change.

What offset projects do you support?

This year we are supporting SA-based biodiverse native vegetation (ACCUs) and wind farms in India. In the past we have purchased offsets to maintain biodiverse native vegetation in WA and NSW and to avoid deforestation in the Amazon and in Tasmania.

Why did you choose these projects?

Uniting Communities has a 50 per cent domestic/50 per cent overseas offsets purchasing policy. This was set to create a balance between cost and local and overseas outcomes. All of the projects chosen have social and economic benefits as well as environmental.

How can the community support you?

Use our services and facilities, shop in our Goodwill Stores and promote Lifeline Adelaide. People and businesses in Adelaide can use our Function Centre at U City, Adelaide’s greenest building by design.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Each year, Uniting Communities reviews its emissions reduction opportunities and creates a plan. Our initiatives include building upgrades, policy decisions such as to convert the vehicle fleet to hybrid, sustainable procurement and behaviour change initiatives that reduce energy, waste, water, paper and travel. We educate our employees at orientation and via our online carbon training.

What has been the impact of your action?

Since the commencement of Uniting Communities’ Beyond Carbon Neutral Program, more than $1 million has been saved in operating costs and emissions have reduced by over 30 per cent overall.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Before aiming for certification carefully consider how you will incorporate carbon measurement and reduction into your business governance, operations and strategy. Make sure the Board and senior management are committed and that a budget is allocated each year. Ensure you have resourcing and take advice from a carbon consultant. Being carbon neutral is not to be taken lightly but is a big achievement.
