Virgin Australia

The Virgin Australia Group includes Virgin Australia Airlines, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines and Tigerair Australia. In FY19 we transported over 25 million passengers across our domestic and international networks.

“Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification is the most rigorous and credible carbon neutral certification available, providing the necessary validation for consumers to be able to participate in carbon offset programs and know that their funds will make a verifiable impact.”

Type of certification

Service. The Group is Certified Carbon Neutral against the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard for its 'Fly Carbon Neutral' product. Under the program, seat emissions are calculated and an equivalent amount of carbon offset credits are charged to the traveller and then retired, meaning the emissions from their flight is truly neutralised.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Virgin Australia launched the world’s first government certified airline Carbon Offset scheme in March 2007. Tigerair Australia launched its certified airline Carbon Offset scheme in July 2017.

Why are you carbon neutral?

As an airline company, we are well aware of the challenge to balance the demand and growth of air travel while at the same time actively working to reduce aircraft emissions.

The Fly Carbon Neutral program is a step towards creating a sustainable aviation environment, allowing travellers to make a personal choice to offset emissions related to their travel.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Being Certified Carbon Neutral ensures emissions relating to each flight are accurate and robust. Climate Active certification provides transparency to our customers that 100 per cent of their contribution goes to sustainable offset programs certified through global best practice standards.

What offset projects do you support?

Virgin Australia guests offsetting their flights are directly supporting the preservation of Tasmania’s native forests while also contributing to the protection of important species and ecosystems through the Tasmanian Land Conservancy. Meanwhile, Tigerair Australia guests flying carbon neutral are supporting the South East Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (SEALFA) project in Northern Australia, which uses strategic fire management activities to reduce the fire generated emissions of greenhouse gas.

How can the community support you?

Consumers can support the Group’s Fly Carbon Neutral programs when flying with Virgin Australia or Tigerair Australia. We calculate emissions attributable to a passenger’s seat on each route, and then multiply this by the purchase price of greenhouse gas abatement projects to determine the final purchase fee. This carbon offset is then available for purchase when booking a flight, or through the 'Manage Your Booking' functionality

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

Our Group-wide methodical approach to fuel efficiency has reduced our fuel consumption by nine million kilograms, or 28,000 tonnes of carbon per annum – an equivalent of planting 420,000 trees.

In August 2019 we became the first local airline to install split scimitar winglets to reduce drag on the wing. They will save more than 160,000 kilograms of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by around 515 tonnes – per aircraft, per year.

One of the most promising opportunities for airlines to reduce our emissions remains low carbon alternative fuels. In FY19 we worked with partners to deliver the country’s first trial of sustainable aviation fuel at Brisbane Airport. More than 700 flights flew with low-carbon, sustainable fuels.

We’re excited for what can be achieved in the sustainability space in aviation, and continue to seek new opportunities and solutions to lead the aviation industry, both in Australia and across the world.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Trust is a key requirement for consumers to participate in environmental protection projects.

Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification is the most rigorous and credible carbon neutral certification available, providing the necessary validation for consumers to be able to participate in carbon offset programs and know that their funds will make a verifiable impact.
