Vulcan Energy Resources
Vulcan Energy is aiming to decarbonise the transition to electric mobility, through its world-first Zero Carbon Lithium™ business for electric vehicle batteries, and its renewable energy business.
“Being Climate Active certified is another way we can transparently demonstrate our commitment to a more sustainable and renewable energy future.”
Type of certification
How long have you been certified carbon neutral?
Since June 2021.
Why did you choose to go carbon neutral?
Vulcan Energy Resources exists to decarbonise the transition to electric mobility, aiming to produce the world’s first premium, battery-quality lithium chemicals with net zero greenhouse gas emissions, through our Zero Carbon Lithium™ Project. As such, we are committed to being a net zero emissions business and working within the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Alongside this, being Climate Active certified is another way we can transparently demonstrate our commitment to a more sustainable, renewable energy future and provide a robust third-party verification of our ESG standards alignment, giving our stakeholders further confidence in our company.
What are the anticipated benefits of your carbon neutral certification?
Our commitment to carbon neutrality will have a myriad of benefits including greater stakeholder confidence that we hold ourselves accountable to external standards, greater employee engagement with their individual contribution to carbon emissions and as representatives of our company, and being part of the Climate Active network of partner companies.
What offset projects do you support?
A reforestation project in Western Australia and a wind-farm project in China.
Why did you choose these projects?
Because we are an ASX listed company with the head office located in Perth (WA), we sought to incorporate the generation of co-benefits with both a domestic biodiverse reforestation project and an internationally recognised carbon offset project. The credits we have purchased directly support a West Australian-based project that continues to benefit indigenous populations, forest regeneration, biodiversity creation and eco-system support.
How can the community support you?
We engage with the community and shareholders via social media, sharing important company announcements and news about the renewable energy and battery metals industries. Anyone interested in our unique story and wanting to track our progress towards our Zero Carbon Lithium™ Product is encouraged to follow us online.
What else are you doing to reduce emissions?
The Climate Active certification process emphasised the inherent carbon emissions levels of the external professional services we use. We are therefore looking to implement a 'carbon neutrality’ scale for our suppliers and service providers, with preference weighted towards companies actively working to reduce their emissions levels.
What advice would you give to a business considering certification?
Through our certification we hope to encourage others in our industry to consider certification because it is only through a collaborative, concerted effort that we will have a chance to reverse the damage already done and ensure a better future globally.
We would also recommend utilising a climate consultant, as they are invaluable to guiding you through the process and will save much time and confusion if you are new to carbon data reporting.
