“Certification helps businesses to report their carbon emissions by providing a rigorous and in depth assessment, which in turn is helping to drive performance and the transition to a low carbon economy.”

Type of certification

Organisation and Service.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2018.

Why are you carbon neutral?

One of the most urgent problems facing our world today is climate change – a problem that the tourism industry can’t ignore any longer. As a travel company, we knew it was our responsibility to sustain and protect the environment. That’s why we made a commitment 10 years ago to minimise our environmental impact through our Carbon Management Plan, which helps us to operate our business in a sustainable manner and outlines our carbon offsetting initiatives. In 2010, Intrepid became a completely carbon-neutral business, carbon-offsetting trips for all our travellers. In late 2018, we revised our reporting methodology in line with the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Revising our reporting methodology in line with the Climate Active framework improved the monitoring and management of our environmental data to make it more efficient and user-friendly for our staff. Improving our reporting helps us to drive our performance to decarbonize our business and to engage staff in environmental initiatives. As part of our decarbonisation efforts we are improving resource efficiency, switching to renewable energy across our global operations and seeking less carbon-intensive transport on our trips.

We continue to balance the remaining unavoidable emissions by purchasing internationally-certified carbon credits.

What offset projects do you support?

We have identified six key international projects that we will purchase carbon credits with from 2018-2020.

Why did you choose these projects?

The projects we invest in are high quality and create genuine benefits to the environment, as well as positive social and economic impacts for local communities. The projects also aligned with the locations and global footprint of our trips and operations (except the polar region).

How can the community support you?

Our customers and other travellers also have the opportunity to support community-based initiatives to address climate change through the Intrepid Foundation. Following on from Intrepid Group’s initial support of the 2040 film, we're now working together to make the vision of the film a reality. The Intrepid Foundation is aiming to raise $350,000 AUD for the seaweed solution to help reverse the effects of global warming. Every donation made will be matched dollar for dollar by Intrepid Group. Many of those who have supported this initiative learned of the project by watching the film.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

In addition to being carbon-neutral, Intrepid will create greater environmental benefits through our efforts to become climate positive by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while decarbonizing our business through reductions in emissions from our trips and operations.

What has been the impact of your action?

We now have four offices globally that are using 100 per cent renewable energy with the Melbourne office using a carbon neutral provider. We also relocated our Melbourne-based Head Office to a Green Office which resulted in a reduction of average sqm/FTE and average kwh/sqm.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

The certification helps businesses to report their carbon emissions by providing a rigorous and in depth assessment, which in turn is helping to drive performance and the transition to a low carbon economy.
