“Carbon neutral certification is an effective way to engage with employees, customers and investors.”

Type of certification

Organisation.

How long have you been certified carbon neutral?

Since 2011.

Why are you carbon neutral?

Dexus seeks to enhance property and portfolio climate resilience by minimising greenhouse gas emissions impact, adapting for change and influencing across our value chain. Dexus is committed to transitioning to a low carbon future through the Group’s target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Dexus participates in Climate Active to demonstrate this commitment and to offset emissions from its corporate operations.

What are the benefits of your carbon neutral certification?

Carbon neutral certification is an effective way to engage with employees, customers and investors on the Group’s emissions reduction goals.

What offset projects do you support?

The WA Yarra Yarra Biodiversity 400km north of Perth, the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo, and Improved Kitchen Regimes globally.

Why did you choose these projects?

The Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor program aims to reconnect remnant vegetation sites and link 12 nature reserves across a vast tract of land. Trees and shrubs are planted to help establish habitat to protect and recover endangered and declining woodland and fauna. Rimba Raya is the largest project in the world focused on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation by preserving more than 91,000 hectares of tropical peat swampland. The area is rich with flora and fauna including the endangered Bornean orangutan. The program also aims to improve the lives of the locals, supporting their education, employment and a positive future. The Improved Kitchen Regimes project involves the distribution of improved cook stoves and safe water technologies into communities. In addition to reducing deforestation through less wood use for cooking, the stoves reduce incidences of illness related to indoor air pollution, smoke inhalation and the consumption of unsafe drinking water. The project also creates employment opportunities for indigenous communities.

How can the community support you?

Customers can assist Dexus by promoting our certification and seeking to adopt it across their organisation or products. In many cases our customers are also our suppliers and so customer support can assist Dexus to drive emissions abatement across our entire value chain.

What else are you doing to reduce emissions?

For over a decade, we have reduced our environmental footprint by concentrating on improving energy and water efficiency across our properties as well as reducing the group’s greenhouse gas emissions. We have integrated risks and opportunities from climate change into our operations by investing in the physical resilience of the portfolio and supporting the transition to a low carbon economy by committing to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

What has been the impact of your action?

Through Climate Active certification, Dexus has offset more than 30,000 tonnes of emissions since 2011 and avoided over 675,000 tonnes of emissions since 2008 by focusing on improved energy efficiency across operations, acquisitions and developments. In addition, Dexus has purchased more than 126GWh of certified GreenPower and reduced emissions by an additional 116,000 tonnes.

What advice would you give to a business considering certification?

Certification is a straightforward way for businesses of all sizes to engage with their employees to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By investing in certified projects, businesses are facilitating investment in resource efficiency, land conservation, and carbon sequestration projects that also provide social co-benefits.
